Adran Y Canol Oesoedd - The Dark Ages Section

Y Canol Oesoedd

Yn ystod y rhan fwyaf o'r Oesoedd Canol, y pedair teyrnas, Gwynedd, Powys, Deheubarth a Morgannwg, oedd cyfansoddiad gwleidyddol Cymru. Rhenid pob un o'r rhain yn gantrefi, ac is-rennid pob cantref wedyn yn gymydau, a phob cwmwd yn cynnwys nifer o drefydd neu drefeysydd. Sylwer, fodd bynnag fod cantref a chwmwd yn dermau trawsgyfnewidiol yng Nghyfreithiau Cymru. O'r ddau, dichon mai'r cantref oedd y trefniant cynharaf, a dichon mai is-raniad hwylusach oedd 'cwmwd' a fabwysiadawyd tua adeg y Goncwest Normanaidd, er nad oes sicrwydd o gwbl o hyn.

Yr oedd yn Llŷn, yr ardal ffrwythlon wedi ei hamgylchu a'r mor, dri chwmwd: Dinllaen (gyda'r gaer ym Mhortinllaen) oedd yn ymestyn o'r Eifl i Garn Fadryn a'i llys brenhinol yn Nefyn; Cymydmaen, yn ymestyn o Garn Fadryn i Aberdaron, a'i llys yn Neigwl; ac Afflogion ar draethau Bae Ceredigion o Ynysoedd St Tudwal i'r afon Erch a Phwllheli yn ganolfan. Yr oedd hefyd yn y cantref y clas yn Aberdaron a'r Ynys Enlli enwog.

The Middle ages

During the greater part of the Middle Ages, Wales consisted politically of the four great kingdoms of Gwynedd, Powys, Deheubarth, and Morgannwg. Each of these was divided into cantrefs (or hundreds), and each cantref in its turn was subdivided into commotes or cymydau, a cymwd consisting of a number of trefs or townships. It should be noted, however, that cantrefs and cymydau are interchange able terms in the Welsh Laws. Of the two, the cantref was possibly the older organisation; the cymwd may have been a convenient subdivision brought in about the time of the Norman Conquest, though this is by no means certain.

This remote, sea-locked but fertile region of Llyn consisted of three commotes: Dinllaen (with its fort on Porth dinllaen), which stretched from the Rivals to Garn Fadryn, and had its royal manor at Nefyn; Cymydmaen, which extended from Carn Fadryn to Aberdaron, with its court at Neigwl; and Afloegion (or Cafflogion in its corrupt form), on the shores of Cardigan Bay from St. Tudwal's Isles to the river Erch, with Pwllheli as its centre. There were also within the cantref the clas at Aberdaron and the famous Isle of Bardsey.
