Eglwys St Hywyn ar lan y môr a gwrthglawdd newydd wedi cael ei godi ym 1998 i wrthsefyll yr erydu sydd yn digwydd yn barhaus ac sydd wedi bygwth diogelwch yr eglwys o'r blaen. Cysylltir eglwys Aberdaron bellach ag enw'r bardd R.S. Thomas lle'r oedd yn rheithor. Mae yna dau cereg arysgrifiedig o Anelog yn yr Eglwys o'r 6ed ganrif.

Peth o adeiladwaith yr adeilad presennol yn mynd yn ol i'r Cl2 gyda'r bwa Normanaidd uwchben y drws. Yma yn 1115 y cafodd Gruffydd ap Rhys, tywysog Deheubarth, noddfa rhag ei dad-yng nghyfraith Gruffudd ap Cynan, tywysog Gwynedd. Y sefydliad yn dyddio'n ol i'r C6 ac yn gysylltiedig a'r Abaty yn Enlli, ac yn fan gorffwys i'r pererinion yn y C6 a chyfle i ymlacio a gweddio cyn cychwyn ar y fordaith enbydus dros y Swnt.

Codwyd eglwys newydd yn 1841 ar dir uwch ar ochor ogleddol y pentref, am fod y mor yn bygwth yr hen adeilad, ond nid oedd y plwyfolion yn hapus ynddi a gadawyd hi ac atgyweirio'r hen eglwys i gael ei defnyddio yn ol. Yr eglwys yn agored i'r cyhoedd yn ddyddiol a llyfrau a chreiriau ar werth.

Ynys Gwylan Fawr ac Ynys Gwylan Fach yw'r ddwy ynys sydd i'w gweld ym Mae Aberdaron .

 

The Church of St. Hywyn sits on the sea shore with a new sea wall built in 1998 to stop the continuos erosion that has threatened the church many times before. The Church is associated lately with the poet R S Thomas who was rector here. The church now houses two C5-6 inscribed stones from the earliest local christian settlement at Anelog.

Part of the present building dates back to the C12 with a Norman arch above the west door. It was here in 1115 that Gruffydd ap Rhys, the prince of Deheubarth sought sanctuary from his father in-law Gryffudd ap Cynan, prince of Gwynedd. The settlement dates back to the C6 and is associated with the Monastery on Enlli. It is said that grooves in the pillars are where soldiers sharpened their swords. It was a place for the pilgrims to rest and take stock, and to prey before the perilous journey across to Enlli.

A new Church was built in 1841 on higher ground to the North of the village, due to the sea threatening the old church, but the parishioners were not happy in it so they left it and repaired the old church for use again. The church is open daily to the public.

The islands in the bay behind the church are Gwylan Fawr and Gwylan Fach.
