BROADBAND GIVEN BROAD APPEAL BY WELSH LEADERS; DRIVING THE PACE OF BROADBAND REVOLUTION IN WALES

'ForwardBroadband' Calls for Greater Uptake of Broadband Services

Wales' foremost opinion formers and influencers, representing the fabric of Welsh life, are joining forces to push broadband uptake to the very top of the Welsh public agenda as part of the Welsh Assembly Government, Broadband Wales Programme.

The group, ForwardBroadband which comprises of over 50 key individuals, launched their mandate at a conference at the Rhondda Heritage Park Hotel, on the 27th May. Individually they represent 'constituencies' covering voluntary, community, business and public sectors.

As the public understanding of broadband develops, it will be accepted as core infrastructure - similar to roads and rail - and a staple of everyone's lives. Broadband provides a range of services from business to entertainment as well as delivering specific uses for individual areas of the community; the young, the visually impaired, and particular industry sectors.

ForwardBroadband has been formed with the understanding that broadband technology is not in itself important - it's about what can be done with it. Its self-declared mandate is to make broadband relevant to everybody; to help define the needs of individual groups of interest in Wales and locate the relevant broadband applications to help them.

Quotes:
Michael Eaton, Director of Broadband Wales Programme: "Broadband is undoubtedly one of the major modern infrastructures that any society or economy need to have in place in order to remain successful. The members of ForwardBroadband will be playing a key role in guiding all prospective users of broadband - from consumers, to big business as well as the voluntary sector - towards the undeniable benefits that will make Wales as a whole prosper."

Chris Young, Chief Executive of the Welsh Electronics Forum is a member of the group, representing the interests of software, IT services, semi-conductor and electronics companies: "Isolating the various specific applications for broadband is a key issue for us, as is understanding how to quantify returns on investment. Some of our members would like to consider growing and developing their businesses outside of the urban areas of Wales in order to realise easier commuting, lower operational costs and to attract skills. There is a need for consistent, coherent policies and we welcome the opportunity to influence demand-led action through ForwardBroadband."

Jeremy Wright, Head of Economic Development at Powys County Council is another member of the group: "Till now, economic development has concentrated on land, buildings and roads. Broadband offers a new paradigm in providing an infrastructure for small, high value companies offering higher wages that will have a multiplier effect throughout the economy bringing new enterprises into the area and retaining our home grown talent. The uptake of broadband services will mean self-sustaining communities for businesses and families.
But it's vital that infrastructure in Powys is built at the same time and speed as in other areas. That means getting involved in the process of securing broadband provision across the whole community - by supporting initiatives to ensure the market plays its part, and participating in public sector schemes to counter market failure. Equally valid is the need to stimulate demand among individuals and businesses for what broadband can do for all."

Vanessa Webb, Director of the Wales Council for the Blind: "Charities and voluntary organisations play an increasingly significant role in shaping policy and delivering services in Wales. It is therefore important that we keep up to date with developments in new technology and learn how they can help us work more efficiently and cost-effectively.

The ForwardBroadband initiative will help ensure that people working in the voluntary sector find out about this technological advance and what it can mean for our ability to achieve our aims and objectives. For visually impaired people, access to IT is a top priority and we welcome anything that helps improve and speed up access to e-communication."

About Broadband Wales
The multi-million pound Broadband Wales Programme was launched by the Welsh Assembly Government in July 2002. The programme aims to achieve a competitive and sustainable broadband infrastructure across Wales by March 2007. Specific targets include increases in the access to, and take up of, affordable broadband by individuals, communities, businesses and public sector organisations.

Increased availability and improved take-up of broadband is expected to generate a step-change that will help to underpin the successful transition from an industrial to a modern, knowledge economy.
