Campaign to put pubs at the hub of their communities

CymunedolA new organisation has been launched to help more pubs become the hubs of their communities and save them from closure.
The Community Pubs Foundation was set up by Camra - the Campaign for Real Ale - after research showed that 26 pubs were being closed every month.
The campaigners believe pubs, like local shops and post offices, play a central role in community life and should be protected.
Research by Camra found 69% of people agreed that pubs were vital to the community. The research also found that eight out of ten pubs closed are demolished or turned into housing.

The Community Pubs Foundation will offer advice, guidance and small grants and seek to support those fighting to save pubs of community, architectural or historic importance. It will also seek to improve the viability of pubs by getting pubs and communities to work together to provide key community services and create new opportunities for employment.
Where pubs are threatened with being sold, the foundation will try to ensure they are saved through community ownership. Mwy...More...

This is in line with Business in the Community’s the ‘pub is the hub’ initiative which aims to protect rural pubs by identifying new services that could operate from pubs such as computer literacy training, pensioners’ coffee mornings or a local shop or post office. This initiative is currently being expanded to include a new national board, regional help groups and a national network of advisers.

Pub is the hub co-ordinator John Longden said the campaign would also start ‘involving individuals, the pubs and drinks industry and regional agencies to assist on a wider range of pub diversification projects’.
Camra chief executive Mike Benner added: ‘The loss of a valued community pub will have a negative impact on the local economy, community and tourism; 69% of people recognise the important role pubs play in community life.
‘The Community Pubs Foundation will work with communities whose locals are under threat. We ask those who are seeking to demolish a pub or convert a pub for financial gain to pause and spare a thought for the effect this will have on the local community.’
